about us

As a close-knit group of friends hailing from the historic town of Monemvasia, our project was born out of a shared sense of responsibility and compassion for our community and its silent inhabitants—the stray animals. Every day, as we walk through the ancient streets of our town, we are greeted by the sight of these animals, a constant reminder of their plight and the urgent need for action. This is not just about stray cats—it is about the essence of our city, the health of our community, and the integrity of our historical heritage. Our motivation for this project goes beyond mere observation. It is deeply rooted in our connection to our village and its heritage. The Castle of Monemvasia is not just a tourist attraction; it is a living symbol of history, and the welfare of its animal inhabitants directly reflects our cultural values. We feel a strong moral responsibility towards these animals. In many ways, they are as much a part of Monemvasia as the cobbled streets and ancient walls. But most importantly, they are living beings that deserve a life free from suffering. The idea for this initiative came from a combination of our daily experiences and a broader perspective gained by two members of our team who participated in the Erasmus+ program last year and became more involved with the opportunities offered by the European Union through its programs. programs, eventually settling on the European Solidarity Corps. Observing different approaches to social welfare and social responsibility during our stay abroad inspired us to think about how we could apply similar concepts in our home country. We recognized that while local authorities are doing their best, the measures implemented are not sufficient to meet the growing challenges. There is a gap that needed to be filled, and we felt the need to intervene. Our plan is more than a series of actions; it is a call to cultivate a compassionate community, one that sees value in every creature and understands the importance of harmonious coexistence. By improving the lives of these stray animals, we are not only enhancing their well-being, but also ensuring the health and safety of our community. We envision a Monemvasia where every resident and visitor is aware of and participates in the well-being of our animal companions. This is our home, and we believe it is our duty to care for all who live here. Through this initiative, we aim to bring our community closer together, fostering a spirit of collective responsibility and empathy. It is a journey we are embarking on not only as a team, but as part of a wider community that values its heritage, its environment, and every life within it. This project, for us, is a testament to what we stand for as residents of Monemvasia—compassion, responsibility, and community involvement.
